Doire Colmcille Club News

Latest News  - 13th May

Training for senior players continueson Thursday evenings at 7pm at Saint Columbs College. Contact Matt on 07711486537 for further details.

The Under 16s had another good display last week, beating Swatragh 3-09 to 1-06. Right from the throw-in Ismail and Shane dominated that sector, with good early pressure and possession not being reflected on the scoreboard. Midway through the first half the sides were even, however playing against the strong breeze we found it hard to get the range and translate possession into scores. As Colmcille side progressed into the Swatragh final third, their opponents were left to foul an impressive forward line and with Ciaran Curran was in superb kicking form, picking up the frees and slotting them over, Colmcille got their due rewards. With just over 10 minutes to go to half time, Swatragh then found themselves in front of goal, and took the chance following a mistake in our defence. This did not deter Colmcilles, and a few minutes before the break, Dessie Hegarty played a superb ball into the danger zone and Shane O'Hagan pounced to draw the sides level at 1-04 each. The second half saw a Colmcille side improve in front of the posts, and with the introduction of Tommy McBride and Ronan Doherty, Colmcille freely scored 2-05 over the half. More impressive was the defensive display, keeping Swatragh to only 2 points (1 from a dubious free). With strong defensive displays from Eamon Gillen, Christain Murray and team Captain Vincent McCormick, Ismail Dogaci and Shane O'Hagan bossing the middle and excellent forward play from Dessie Hegarty, Ciaran Curran, Tommy McBride Colmcilles were never in doubt for the 2 points, and with 1 game remaining before the Championship, the side is settling well. Congratulations must also go the Ismail Dogaci and Vincent McCormick for their selection on the U-16 Development squads. Players are also reminded that training continues on Tuesday night at 7pm at St.Columbs College.. For any further details please contact Mark on 07841638558.

Paul's & Louis's U12's made the long trip to Ballymaguigan on Sunday morning for their first Go Games blitz of the year. In their first games against Drum we played some excellent two touch football to win by a few points. In the second games against the home side the months of indoor training were paying good dividends as some excellent passing, shooting, tackling and teamwork ensured that we again won both games by a few points. Well done to all the boys and girls and lets hope the large numbers at training continue. Training continues on Tuesday evening and Saturday morning at the College. Contact Paul for further details on 07732713968. All new players are very welcome.

Brian's U14's made their way to Magilligan on Tuesday for their second league game of the season. With the failure of the referee to turn up for the second time this year against Magilligan both teams agreed to play the game after an official Magilligan referee agreed to do take charge of the game. Emmett McBride was injured and badly missed during the Magilligan game. and Fergal McCormick coming off injured early in the game we struggled against a big strong Magilligan team. Cormac O'Brien lead the team by example with another excellent display capped with several fine points and was well assisted by James Gillespie in defence and Ryan Loughran in attack who scored two super points. Despite the tremendous effort of the whole team we went down by 5 points. Training continues on Wednesday evening and Saturday morning at the College. Contact Brian on 07909717703 for details. All new players are very welcome.

Condolences to U14 players Aodhan & Aaron Irwin on the death of their grandmother. A weakened minor team travelled to Lavey on Tuesday for what proved to be a very positive display against a very strong Lavey team. With Paul McCusker leading the defence and ably assisted by Johnny Brown in the forwards and the hard working Kevin McLaughlin in the midfield the lads showed that there is plenty of potential for the season ahead. Training continues every Thursday from 6.30 - 8pm outdoor at the College. Contact Matt on 07711486537 for more details.

The U-16's took the field on Thursday past for their first competitive game of the season. It was clear from the opening exchanges that a few cobwebs needed 'blowing out' and Pearses took full advantage by storming into an early lead of 2-05 to no score. The remainder of the first half saw Colmcilles settle and steady the ship a bit, with the half time score ending up at 1-02 to 3-07 to the visitors.

The second half was a tighter affair, Colmcilles now getting up to the pace of the game. Although the damage had been done in the first half, a spirited second half performance seen the  scoring for those 30mins a much more even affair, with the final scoreline ending up at 1-05 to 4-08 to the visitors.
Mixed in with some mediocre displays from a rusty Colmcille side, was the occasional glimpse coming from Matthew Gallagher and Eamon Gillen in defence, and Team Captain, Vincent McCormack, at half back.

With plenty of work to do for the remaining games in the league, training continues on Tuesday nights at St.Columbs College. Details of the next game - away to Faughanvale will be given out at training.

Brian's U14's entertained Drumsurn in their first league game of the season at Templemore. Played in good conditions both teams played some great early football before Cormac O'Brien and Emmett McBride took control at midfield.
A great run and pass from O'Brien to Daz Mathuru ended in a great goal which helped us to a 5 point half-time lead. With Caolan McGrath working hard at half forward and Mark Doherty commanding the defence we we able to run out by 7 point winners. Well done to Brian and all the lads on what was a great start for a promising squad. Brian's U14 travelled to Magilligan on Saturday for the second round of the Feile na nog. Played in what can only be described as hurricane conditions the lads performed brilliantly against a big and strong Magilligan. Scores were to the minimum as the gale favoured no one but after some excellent work by Niall Lynch, Fergal McCormack and Caolan mcGrath we worked the ball upfield to Ryan Loughran who in turn played a neat one-two with Aodhan Irwin before passing to Caolan Sheilds for what would be our only score of the first half. In the second half the tireless efforts of Emmett McBride paid off when he soloed up field and passed to Darren Quinn who in turn passed to Niall keenan who slammed the ball to the roof of the net for us to lead by 4 points. Magilligan replied with a great point but with Terry Burke pulling off some super saves and Mark Doherty, Lawrence Taggart and the impressive Odhran McCartney commanding the defence we held firm. Eoghan Crocker came close with a swirling shot after good work by James Gillespie and Aaron Irwin. With the last kick of the game Magilligan scored a goal from a free from 15 metres out to leave the game all square on the final whistle. Still undefeated - training continues on Fridays at Duncreggan Road. Next game is at home to Newbridge. Contact Brian on 07909717703 for details.
